Treat Visp as a rail junction, not a destination: 1 night if you need a bed before Zermatt or Saas-Fee, otherwise pass through.
Visp is a German-speaking town of about 7,700 in the Rhone valley and the busiest rail interchange in the Upper Valais: roughly 230 trains a day, plus the narrow-gauge line up to Zermatt. Almost everyone heading to Zermatt or Saas-Fee passes through it. The old town is 15 minutes on foot from the station and the sights take a few hours, so it works as a short stop rather than a base.

Getting around
The centre is walkable: station to old town is about 15 minutes uphill. Town buses run at best half-hourly; the Visperterminen bus stops at Visp, Spital, close to the old town and saves the climb. Regional trains and the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (platforms 1–3) leave from the same station.
