Baden-Baden

Give Baden-Baden 1–2 nights: one for the baths and the Lichtentaler Allee, a second only if you hike the Merkur or want a spa day.

Baden-Baden is a small thermal spa town at the edge of the Black Forest, part of the UNESCO-listed Great Spa Towns of Europe. The centre is walkable in an afternoon; the reason to sleep here is the water — Caracalla Therme for swimsuits, Friedrichsbad for the traditional nude Roman-Irish bath. It is a stop, not a base: the railway station sits 15 minutes by bus from the centre.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk; buses radiate from Leopoldplatz and Augustaplatz to the station and surrounding villages. Buy a ticket at the machine before boarding, or from the driver. Express buses take about 5 minutes from the main station to the centre. Free town-centre WiFi is branded BAD-WLAN.

Old town around Marktplatz and Römerplatz

Walk to both spas, the casino and the pedestrian zone; church bells are loud in some rooms.

Around Augustaplatz and Lichtentaler Allee

Quieter, park-side, 5–10 min walk to the bath quarter; the grand hotels sit here.

Near the railway station (Oos)

Cheaper and practical for early trains, but 15 min by bus from the centre.

Outer districts (Rebland, Lichtental)

Vineyard and village stays; you need a car or bus to reach the centre.

Watch out

Safety

A very safe small town; the real risks are slippery spa floors, the steep climb to the youth hostel, and pickpockets only in the usual crowded spots.
  • Baden-Baden station is 15 min by bus from the centre: bus 201 towards Lichtental/Oberbeuern, get off at Leopoldplatz.
  • A city tax of about €3.50 (≈ US$5) per person per night is often not included in booking-portal prices: check your confirmation.
  • Friedrichsbad is textile-free on most days (two days a week are set aside for clothed bathing): read the room sequence before you undress.
  • Caracalla Therme sauna area is nude and mixed-sex; swimwear is required in the pools.
  • Casino Baden-Baden has a dress code and an entry fee: check the official site before you go.
