Baden-Baden is a small thermal spa town at the edge of the Black Forest, part of the UNESCO-listed Great Spa Towns of Europe. The centre is walkable in an afternoon; the reason to sleep here is the water — Caracalla Therme for swimsuits, Friedrichsbad for the traditional nude Roman-Irish bath. It is a stop, not a base: the railway station sits 15 minutes by bus from the centre.
