Molde sits on a south-facing slope above the Romsdalsfjord, with a panorama of roughly 222 alpine summits across the water. The town itself is small and rebuilt after 1940, so most of the value is the view from Varden, the open-air Romsdal Museum and day trips to the Atlantic Road, Trollstigen and Bud. Cruise ships call here 40–50 times each summer, which sets the rhythm of the centre.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk. Local buses cover the town and the airport road; the bus terminal is central and also has a taxi rank. Rentable bicycles are available in town. For Varden, walk the trail from the Romsdal Museum (about 1 hour up) or drive about 10 minutes.

Watch out

Safety

Molde is a small, calm town and violent crime is rare. The real risks are weather and terrain: wet, steep trails on Varden and Moldemarka, slippery rocks and cold water at Hustadvika, and winter driving on mountain roads.
  • Trollstigen is closed in winter and usually opens at the end of May; check the opening date before you plan a day trip.
  • The Varden road and restaurant operate roughly May–October only; outside that you walk.
  • Cruise-ship days (40–50 calls each summer) fill the centre, the museum and the boats; check the port schedule.
  • Ferry and express-boat timetables change by season; the E39 ferry from Vestnes runs frequently but not all night.
