Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Wadebridge is a small market town on the Camel Estuary, 8 km upstream from Padstow. It is not a sightseeing town: its value is the flat, traffic-free Camel Trail, a pedestrianised shopping street, and cheaper beds than the coast. Two nights covers the trail, Padstow and one inland house or garden. Without a bike or a car, the town runs out of things to do in half a day.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Molesworth Street is pedestrianised and the old bridge is 5 min from it. The Camel Trail starts near the town and runs flat and traffic-free to Padstow (about 8 km) and south towards Bodmin. Bikes can be hired in town; book or arrive early on summer mornings. Buses run to Padstow, Bodmin and Newquay, but services are thin on Sundays and in winter; a car makes the beaches and inland houses practical.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Padstow

go

Door to door: About 40 min by bike, 1 h 45 min on foot

Camel Trail by bike or on foot, or bus from the town centre

Flat and traffic-free the whole way; hire bikes in Wadebridge rather than Padstow in summer.

Bodmin

caution

Door to door: About 25 min by car

Bus or car on the A389, about 13 km

Useful for the Bodmin Parkway rail link and shops; the town itself is not a highlight.

Tintagel

go

Door to door: About 45 min by car

Car on the A39 and B3266 (≈ US$4,500), about 30 km

Castle ruins and coast path; timed tickets in summer (check).

Boscastle

go

Door to door: About 40 min by car

Car on the B3266 (≈ US$4,500), about 26 km

Small harbour village; pair it with Tintagel in one day.

Bude

caution

Door to door: About 1 h by car

Car on the A39, about 45 km

Beaches and sea pool; a long bus trip, so drive or skip.

Newquay

go

Door to door: About 40 min by car

Car on the A39 and A3059 (≈ US$4,500), about 30 km; seasonal buses

Surf beaches and the airport; check bus times before relying on them.

Perranporth

caution

Door to door: About 50 min by car

Car via the A39 and A3075 (≈ US$4,500), about 40 km

A beach day; no practical public transport link from Wadebridge.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre (Molesworth Street and The Platt)

Walk to shops, pubs and the bridge; best for a car-free stay.

Eddystone Road and Commissioners Quay

Riverside, near the trail head and the main car park; quieter at night.

Egloshayle and Sladesbridge

Across the old bridge, 15–25 min walk out; cheaper rooms and pubs with parking.

Chapel Amble and St Minver

Villages 5–10 min by car; self-catering cottages and caravan parks, car needed.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are estuary tides and mud, unlit lanes after dark, and summer bike-hire queues. Standard UK advice applies: 999 in an emergency, 111 for NHS non-urgent.
  • Beds and campsites fill in July and August and around the Royal Cornwall Show in early June: book weeks ahead.
  • The Camel Trail is shared with walkers and dogs; keep left and ring a bell, and expect queues for bike hire on summer mornings.
  • Bus services to outlying beaches are limited, especially on Sundays and outside summer.
  • The estuary has strong currents and mud at low water: swim at lifeguarded beaches, not in the Camel.

  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Old Bridge, Pencarrow House, Regal Cinema, Camel Trail hire points) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Tide and weather fixtures for the estuary and the trail so gates A–D can go green.
