Nathdwara is a pilgrimage town of about 42,000 people in the Aravalli hills on the Banas River, 48 km north of Udaipur. Everything revolves around the Haveli — the Shrinathji temple, where darshan opens eight times a day and the noon Rajbhog is the busiest. Non-Hindu visitors can enter, but phones and cameras are banned inside, and the town is strictly vegetarian. Treat it as a half-day or one-night add-on to Udaipur, not a base.

Getting around

The town is small and walkable; most of it sits within a few minutes of the Haveli. Autos and taxis cover the 1–2 km between the highway hotels and the temple. Udaipur is 48 km away by bus or taxi on NH-8; the nearest useful railheads are Udaipur, Mavli and Phalna, with onward road transfer.

Watch out

Safety

A small, busy pilgrimage town and generally safe by day; the real risks are crush-level crowds at Rajbhog and festivals, heat in summer, and traffic on NH-8 after dark. Keep phones out of the temple and watch your footing in the wet lanes.
  • Phones and cameras are banned inside the temple premises — leave them at your room or in a hotel locker.
  • Darshan runs in eight timed slots; miss one and you wait for the next. Crowds peak at Rajbhog around noon and on weekends and festivals.
  • The town is vegetarian and alcohol-free in practice; dharamshalas ban meat, smoking and drinking outright.
  • Festival days (Holi, Annakut, Janmashtami) pack the whole town — book a room before you travel.
  • Temple timings shift with the season and festival calendar: check the official temple site or your hotel on the day.
