Merikarvia is a coastal municipality of about 3,000 people in northern Satakunta, between Pori and Kristinestad. It has an indented shoreline, a fishing river, and the outer Oura archipelago, part of Bothnian Sea National Park. There is no railway: you arrive by bus on school-day services or by car on the E8, and you need a bike, car or taxi to reach most sights. One or two nights covers the church, Lankoski and a boat trip; anglers and boaters stay longer.

Getting around

No train station. Local buses run several times daily on school days, mostly to and from Pori; weekend travel usually means an express bus on the E8 and a walk or taxi from the Tuorila junction. For Lankoski, the coast road and the marina, a car or bike is the practical option. Taxis must be booked; there is no rank. Boats to the Oura islands run on request from Krookka.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are cold water, wind and fog on the Bothnian Sea, thin ice in winter, and long gaps between buses: tell someone your plan before a boat or river trip.
  • Buses are sparse outside school days and almost absent at weekends: check timetables before you commit.
  • Do not land on Oura islands with nesting birds April–July; keep to duckboards and marked paths.
  • The Oura islands are exposed with little shelter: take windproof layers and your own drinking water.
  • Well water at Ouraluoto is not potable; bring water.
  • Many cottages, cafés and the marina operate May–September only.
