Château-d'Œx is a village of about 3,500 people in the French-speaking Pays-d'Enhaut, on the MOB GoldenPass railway between Montreux and Zweisimmen. It is small, hilly and walkable, with a modest ski area at La Braye, balloon flights, and 300 km of marked walking paths. Most travellers use it as a one-night rail stop or a low-key alternative to Gstaad, not as a destination in itself.

Getting around

Walking covers the village, but it is hilly: expect a steep climb on most routes. The MOB train links the station to Montreux, Gstaad and Zweisimmen hourly. A local bus runs to Le Sépey, where you can connect toward Aigle. A car helps for La Braye and the side valleys; winter tyres and snow chains are needed in snow.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are mountain weather, unmarked snow slopes off La Braye, and steep village lanes in ice: check the forecast and lift status before you commit a day.
  • Village is on a slope: a 10-min walk can mean a real climb with bags.
  • Museum of the Pays-d'Enhaut closes in November.
  • La Braye is a small ski area (about 29 km of runs, 7 lifts): check snow and lift status before booking a ski trip.
  • Balloon flights run weather permitting and are often cancelled at short notice: keep a spare morning.
  • Many village businesses shut early in the evening; eat before 20:00 or check opening hours.
