Chenoa

Skip as a base: a Route 66 village of about 1,700 with one motel. Stop 2–3 hours off I-55, or sleep one night if you are driving Chicago to St. Louis.

Chenoa is a small Central Illinois village on I-55, north of Bloomington-Normal, laid out in 1856 where two railroad townsites met. It sits on the old Route 66 alignment, so the draw is a handful of historic buildings, a small museum and a bar or two — not a destination in itself. Come by car, on the way somewhere else.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: there is no local bus or taxi in the village. Streets are quiet enough to cycle, and the historic core is walkable in about 15 minutes end to end. I-55 runs north–south through town; US-24 crosses east–west.

One budget chain motel at the interchange; the only practical bed in the village. Book ahead on holiday weekends.

Bloomington-Normal

About 30–40 min south: far more rooms, restaurants and an Amtrak station. Better base for the area.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet rural village and generally safe. The real risks are driving: winter ice, deer at dusk on US-24, and long gaps between services.
  • No public transport and no taxi: plan every errand by car.
  • The old Route 66 bridge is closed to vehicles — walk in, do not drive onto it.
  • Small-town hours: many shops and the museum keep short, part-week openings — check before driving out.
  • Winter ice and summer storms can close rural roads quickly.
