Chenoa
Skip as a base: a Route 66 village of about 1,700 with one motel. Stop 2–3 hours off I-55, or sleep one night if you are driving Chicago to St. Louis.
Chenoa is a small Central Illinois village on I-55, north of Bloomington-Normal, laid out in 1856 where two railroad townsites met. It sits on the old Route 66 alignment, so the draw is a handful of historic buildings, a small museum and a bar or two — not a destination in itself. Come by car, on the way somewhere else.

Get around
A car is effectively required: there is no local bus or taxi in the village. Streets are quiet enough to cycle, and the historic core is walkable in about 15 minutes end to end. I-55 runs north–south through town; US-24 crosses east–west.
