Cobh is a small port town on Great Island in Cork Harbour, 25 minutes by train from Cork city. Almost everything worth seeing sits within a 15-minute walk of the waterfront: the cathedral above town, the heritage and Titanic museums, and the ferry to Spike Island. It is a day trip or a single overnight, not a multi-day base.

Getting around

On foot. The station, waterfront, Casement Square, cathedral and museums are all within about 15 minutes' walk, though the town is steep. Irish Rail commuter trains run to Cork about every 30–60 min (25 min). Bus 200 from Cork takes about 40 min. Local taxis wait at Pearse Square. A car is only needed for Fota, Cuskinny or the island's far side.

Safety

A safe, small town; the real risks are steep wet pavements, tide and weather on the harbour, and late-night walks back up the hill. Standard precautions apply around pubs at closing time.
  • The town is built on a hill: expect steep streets and steps between the waterfront and the cathedral.
  • Spike Island runs on a seasonal ferry timetable and sells out in summer; book a dated slot ahead.
  • Cruise-ship days flood the small centre: check the harbour schedule and do the museums early or late.
  • Many restaurants and pubs keep shorter hours outside summer; check before you rely on a late kitchen.
