El Cuyo
Go for 2–3 nights if you kite or want a quiet Gulf beach; skip if you need nightlife, shops or a car-free bus network.
El Cuyo is a barrier-island fishing town of about 1,500 people on Yucatán's north coast, between the Gulf of Mexico and the Ría Lagartos lagoon. It is a kitesurfing and birdwatching base with small guest houses, no chain hotels and no town market. Two or three nights covers it; most people come by car or bus via Tizimín.

Safety
- Hurricane season runs late June to late October; check forecasts before booking a non-refundable stay.
- Sargassum can wash up on Gulf beaches in summer.
- Combi shuttles leave only with 9 or more passengers, so they can run late; the Noreste bus is more dependable.
- No large stores or souvenir shops: bring cash and any medication you need.
- Some beaches and the lagoon have no lifeguards; currents and shallow flats vary.
