Bongaigaon is a Lower Assam rail and road junction of about 94,000 people, on the line between Guwahati and the Northeast and on the highway toward Siliguri and Bhutan. New Bongaigaon is one of Assam's largest stations. The town itself is a market centre with a hilltop temple; the real draws — Manas National Park, the Jogighopa rock-cut caves, Kakoijana — sit outside it. Most travellers use it for a night, a meal and a connection.

Getting around

The town is small: auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws cover it cheaply, and day-time city buses run across the district. For Manas, Kakoijana or Jogighopa, plan on a hired car or shared jeep — public service to those sites is limited (check locally).

Safety

Bongaigaon is a working junction town and generally calm, but it is not set up for tourists: the real risks are monsoon flooding and road conditions, unlit roads after dark, and arranging a Manas permit too late.
  • Monsoon (Jun–Sep) brings flooding and washed-out roads across the Brahmaputra plain: check conditions before any road leg.
  • Manas National Park is seasonal and access rules change: check current permit, guide and vehicle requirements before you travel, not at the gate.
  • New Bongaigaon and old Bongaigaon stations are different places — confirm which one your train uses.
  • Carry small rupee notes; card acceptance outside hotels is limited.
