Onitsha is a trading city on the east bank of the Niger, home to one of West Africa's largest markets and the ceremonial seat of the Obi of Onitsha. Sights are few and spread out, the air is heavy, and hotel stock is thin. Most travellers pass through on the Lagos–Enugu corridor, or use it as a half-day stop between Awka and Asaba.

Safety
- Air quality is poor; the WHO ranked Onitsha among the world's most polluted cities in 2016 — anyone with asthma should plan around it.
- Main Market is crowded and pickpocketing happens; keep phones out of hand and bags in front.
- Do not photograph police or military checkpoints, and expect several on the bridge and expressway.
- Flooding on the Niger floodplain can close roads in the wet season (roughly Jun–Oct).
