Burley is a small New Forest village of about 1,400 people, 6 km south-east of Ringwood and 4 km south of the A31. Ponies and cattle graze the open Forest around the streets, and the village trades on a long witch and folklore connection. It is a base for walking, cycling and heathland, not a sightseeing town: the village centre is 15 minutes on foot end to end.

Getting around

On foot in the village; the centre is small and the lanes have no pavement in places. A car is the practical way to reach the coast, Ringwood and Lyndhurst. The New Forest Tour open-top bus runs a seasonal loop and stops in Burley. Bikes can be hired at the Cross for the day.

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are ponies and cattle on the road, unlit lanes after dark and heath fires in dry summers. Keep to the main tracks and carry water.
  • Ponies and cattle have right of way and will bite or kick if fed: do not touch or feed them.
  • No pavement on some lanes and no street lighting: wear something visible after dark.
  • Heath and Forest car parks can fill by mid-morning in summer; arrive early.
  • Mobile signal is patchy on the heath away from the village.
  • Many village shops and tea rooms close early and some shut one or two weekdays: check before you plan around them.
