  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Stony Brook is a hamlet on Long Island's North Shore, about 60 miles east of New York City, built around Stony Brook University and a small historic village on Route 25A. Most visitors come for a campus event, a wedding or a quiet base between Port Jefferson and Huntington. Two nights is the ceiling; one night plus a beach afternoon covers it.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the station, campus and village are 2.5 miles apart and many roads have no sidewalk. The LIRR Port Jefferson line runs from New York with a change, usually at Huntington. Suffolk County buses serve Route 25A but run infrequently; taxis and rideshare from the station are short and cheap.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Port Jefferson

go

Door to door: About 20 min

Car or LIRR one stop east, about 10–15 min

Harbour village with the Bridgeport ferry; good for dinner.

Huntington

go

Door to door: About 1 h

LIRR west, about 45 min, or 30 min by car

Village green, restaurants and the Heckscher Museum.

Northport

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Car west on Route 25A, about 25 min

Small harbour downtown; pair with Huntington.

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Car to Sayville or Patchogue, then ferry

Car-free beaches; a full day and ferries sell out in summer.

Montauk

overnight

Door to door: About 2 h

Car east via Sunrise Highway, about 1 h 45 min

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep there.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Stony Brook Village Center and Route 25A

Walkable to the museum, shops and restaurants; the only area where you can park once and walk.

Near the LIRR station and university

Cheapest beds and campus access, but the village is about 2.5 miles north: you need a car, bike or taxi.

Port Jefferson

10–15 min east by car; more hotels, restaurants and the ferry to Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a US suburb; the real issues are unlit roads without sidewalks, deer on Route 25A at dusk and rip currents at West Meadow Beach.
  • Roads between the station and the village often lack sidewalks; walk facing traffic and use a light after dark.
  • West Meadow Beach charges non-residents a daily fee in season (Memorial Day to Labor Day); town residents enter free.
  • Some village restaurants and shops close early on weekdays outside summer; check hours before you drive over.
  • Summer weekends fill the North Shore beaches and Route 25A by mid-morning.
