Stony Brook is a hamlet on Long Island's North Shore, about 60 miles east of New York City, built around Stony Brook University and a small historic village on Route 25A. Most visitors come for a campus event, a wedding or a quiet base between Port Jefferson and Huntington. Two nights is the ceiling; one night plus a beach afternoon covers it.

A car is the practical choice: the station, campus and village are 2.5 miles apart and many roads have no sidewalk. The LIRR Port Jefferson line runs from New York with a change, usually at Huntington. Suffolk County buses serve Route 25A but run infrequently; taxis and rideshare from the station are short and cheap.
