Hațeg is a small Transylvanian town of about 9,700 people in Hunedoara County, and the practical centre of Țara Hațegului — the basin where dwarf dinosaur fossils were found. The sights are villages and ruins spread over 20 km, so a car or a hired taxi does the work. Without wheels, Hațeg is a half-day stop between Deva and Petroșani, not a base.

Getting around
The town itself is walkable in 20 minutes. Everything else — Densuș, Sântămăria-Orlea, the geopark sites, the bison reserve, Râușor — needs a car, a taxi from the rank near the I.C. Brătianu college, or an organised tour. Local buses run to the villages but are few; check times the day before.
