Tansen is the old capital of the Palpa kingdom, a Newar hill town at about 1,350 m on a ridge above the Kali Gandaki, roughly 30 km north of Butwal and 120 km from Pokhara. It is small, walkable and short on taxis, with pagoda temples, a rebuilt durbar, brass and dhaka workshops in the bazaar, and Himal views from Srinagar Park. Most travellers use it as one or two nights on the road between Pokhara and Lumbini or Chitwan, not as a base.

Getting around

Walk. Tansen has no rickshaws or taxis in the centre and the town sits on a hillside, so expect short, steep climbs between the bazaar, the durbar and Srinagar Park. Better hotels can arrange a vehicle or motorbike; some guesthouses rent bicycles. For Ranighat and Bhairabsthan you walk or take a local bus part of the way.

Watch out

Safety

Tansen is a small, calm hill town and violent crime against visitors is rare. The real risks are the winding ridge roads, monsoon landslides, steep trails to Ranighat, and altitude and sun on exposed walks: start early, carry water, and avoid the descent after dark.
  • Roads up from Butwal and over from Pokhara are winding and slow; budget more time than the distance suggests.
  • Power cuts are rare in cities now but keep a power bank for guesthouses on the ridge.
  • Ranighat is a 23 km return hike with a long climb back; start early and carry water.
  • Temple grounds are working religious sites: cover shoulders and knees, and ask before photographing shrines or people.
  • Cash is king outside the main hotels; ATMs in Tansen can be empty or offline, so bring rupees from Butwal or Pokhara.
