Chattanooga

Give Chattanooga 2 nights: one full day for Lookout Mountain (Rock City, Ruby Falls, Incline), one for the riverfront and downtown. A car saves hours.

Chattanooga sits on the Tennessee River where I-75 and I-24 meet, about 2 h from Atlanta and 1 h 40 min from Knoxville. The big draws — Rock City, Ruby Falls and the Incline Railway — are all on Lookout Mountain, 6 miles from downtown, so a car or a rideshare changes the day. Downtown itself is compact and walkable: the Tennessee Aquarium, the Walnut Street Bridge and the riverfront are within 15 minutes on foot. Two nights covers it; three if you add the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum or a Chickamauga battlefield day.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable and CARTA runs a free electric shuttle between the Choo Choo area and the Tennessee Aquarium, with service on to the North Shore and Coolidge Park. City buses cost $1.50 adult (reduced fares need a photo ID from the CARTA depot). For Rock City, Ruby Falls and the Incline Railway you need a car, a rideshare or a tour: they sit on Lookout Mountain, about 6 miles from downtown. Rental desks are at the airport.

Downtown / riverfront

Walk to the Aquarium, Walnut Street Bridge and restaurants; best for a first visit without a car.

Southside / Choo Choo district

Around Market Street and the old Terminal Station; cafés and bars, 10–15 min walk to the river.

North Shore / Frazier Avenue

Across the river via the pedestrian bridge; quieter, with Coolidge Park nearby.

Lookout Mountain area

Only if the mountain attractions are your whole trip; you will drive for everything else.

Watch out

Safety

Chattanooga is generally safe for visitors in the downtown, riverfront and North Shore areas. Use normal city sense after dark, keep to lit streets, and drive rather than walk if you are staying out on the mountain after the attractions close.
  • Lookout Mountain attractions are timed-entry in busy periods: buy online before you drive up, or you may wait.
  • Ruby Falls is a cave tour with an elevator descent and no strollers; the cave is about 16°C (60°F) year round, so bring a layer.
  • Summer heat and humidity are real: do the mountain in the morning and the riverfront later.
  • When no speed limit is posted, assume 35 mph, especially downtown and in residential streets.
