Go for one night, not a base: Takeda Castle ruins at dawn, Ikuno silver mine, then move on. Two nights only if you want both areas without rushing.
Asago is a small city in northern Hyogo, inland from Himeji, built around two old mining sites: the Takeda Castle ruins on a ridge above Takeda station, and the Ikuno silver mine and its historic district. The sights sit in separate valleys, so the trip is a rail-and-bus puzzle rather than a walkable town. Most travellers come for the castle ruins, sleep one night near Wadayama or Takeda, and continue to Kinosaki, Tottori or Himeji.

Getting around
Trains do the long hops: the Sanin Main Line and the Bantan Line meet at Wadayama, with Takeda and Ikuno on the Bantan Line. Within each area you walk; the Takeda trailhead is opposite Takeda station (about 40 min uphill) or take the bus to the upper car park. Between areas, the seasonal Tajimawaru "Koseki no Michi" route bus links Wadayama, the Takeda castle town, Mikobata, Ikuno station and the Ikuno mine, with a 35-minute stop at Mikobata; it needs a reservation and runs only in its own season, so check dates before you build a day around it. Without that bus, a car or long taxi rides are the only way between valleys.

The main connection point for the area: the Bantan Line ends here and the Sanin Main Line passes through, with the most beds and food. Best for a one-night stop with bags.
Takeda castle town
Below the ruins, walkable to the trailhead; quiet at night, few places to eat. Best if the castle is the whole point.
Ikuno
Historic mining district near the silver mine; very few beds, so check before you plan around it.

Watch out
Safety
- Takeda Castle ruins close from 4 January through February; hours also shift by season, so check the official city page before you go.
- The Tajimawaru bus needs a reservation and each route has its own operating season: no bus, no Mikobata.
- Mikobata is otherwise reachable only by an expensive taxi ride.
- Rural trains thin out in the evening; check the last connection back to Wadayama before a late start.
- Shirai Omachi wisteria park opens only in the wisteria weeks around Golden Week.
