Bauchi is the capital of Bauchi State and the old seat of the Bauchi Emirate, a walled city from 1805 that came under British protection in 1904. It is a university town of about 690,000 people with a compact centre of 19th-century landmarks, and it is the usual gateway to Yankari National Park. Most travellers pass through on the way to Yankari or Kano rather than staying long.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk in daylight, but distances between the palace, the tomb and the parks are real: use keke napep (three-wheeler) or a taxi for anything over 15 minutes. Agree the fare before you get in. English works; Hausa helps. Roads to Yankari and Kafin Madaki are by car only.
