Stranraer is a small port town at the tip of southwest Scotland, population about 10,300, and the practical gateway to the Rhins of Galloway. Ferries to Northern Ireland now sail from Cairnryan, 4–8 miles north, so the town is quieter than its Victorian heyday. Come for one night before or after a crossing, or as a base for Portpatrick, Castle Kennedy and the Mull of Galloway.

Getting around

The town centre is small enough to walk in about 20 minutes end to end. Local buses 350, 367 and 407 link the centre with the Cairnryan ferry terminals, Portpatrick and the south Rhins; services are limited, so check times before you rely on them. Taxis are the fallback for early ferries. A car makes the peninsula far easier.

Stranraer is a low-crime small town and feels safe by day and evening. The real risks are coastal weather, unlit rural roads at night and thin bus services: tell someone your plan if you walk the Rhins.
  • Ferries leave from Cairnryan, 4–8 miles north of town, not from Stranraer harbour: allow transfer time.
  • Local buses to the ferry terminals run only a handful of times a day and are tied to sailings: check the timetable.
  • Rural bus services on the Rhins are sparse and stop early; a missed last bus means a taxi.
  • Mobile signal is weak away from the town and the ferry port.
  • Coastal weather changes fast: wind and rain even in summer, and paths can be muddy.
