Bamfield is a village of about 180 people on Barkley Sound, split in two by Bamfield Inlet and reached only by gravel logging road, ferry or seaplane. It is the northern trailhead of the 77 km West Coast Trail, a sport-fishing base and home to the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre. Two nights covers the beach, the boardwalk and a trailhead leg; one night is enough if you are only passing through to the trail.

Getting around

The village is small and walkable on the east side, but Bamfield Inlet splits the two halves: cross by water taxi, called on the two-way radios at the public docks (turn the radio off after use). No local bus. Bring a full tank and a checked spare if you drive in — the road is gravel and logging trucks have right of way.

Watch out

Safety

Bamfield is a small, low-crime village; the real risks are the logging road, weather on the water and the rugged West Coast Trail. Tell someone your plan before hiking or paddling, and carry rain gear year-round.
  • Logging trucks have right of way on the Bamfield road: pull over and let them pass.
  • The road is gravel and can be rough; check your spare tire and fuel before leaving Port Alberni.
  • Cell coverage is patchy and some services close outside summer; carry cash and don't rely on card machines.
  • Water taxi radios at the docks are the way to cross the inlet — arrange the last crossing before dark.
  • West Coast Trail hiking is by reservation only through Parks Canada; no reservation, no start.
