Aspen

Go for 3 nights if you ski or hike; 1 night only if you are passing through. Book Maroon Bells access and beds weeks ahead.

Aspen is a small mountain town at 2,400 m with four ski mountains and a summer trail network, not a city you wander for a week. Most trips are 3–4 nights: one ski or hike day, one Maroon Bells or Independence Pass day, one slow day in town. Beds and flights are the constraint, not the sights.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown Aspen is walkable and the free local buses cover town and Snowmass Village; many hotels run airport shuttles. A car helps for Maroon Bells, Independence Pass and downvalley towns, but parking in Aspen is limited and paid. In winter, skis or the ski shuttles replace the car.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Maroon Bells and Maroon Lake

go

Door to door: About 45 min each way

Shuttle from Aspen Highlands in summer, or drive outside shuttle hours

Shuttle tickets are limited and sell out; go at the first departure for calm water and parking.

Independence Pass and Twin Lakes

go

Door to door: About 40 min to the summit

Drive CO-82 east over the pass

Summer only; the road closes for winter. Stop at the ghost town below the pass.

Glenwood Springs

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Drive CO-82 downvalley, about 65 km (40 mi)

Hot springs pool and a walkable old downtown; easy half-day or overnight.

Vail

caution

Door to door: About 2 h

Drive CO-82 to I-70 east

Doable in a day but better as an overnight in ski season.

Palisade and the wine country

overnight

Door to door: About 2 h 30 min

Drive CO-82 to I-70 west

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep in Grand Junction or Palisade.

Denver

overnight

Door to door: About 4 h by car

Drive CO-82 and I-70, or fly from ASE

A full-day drive each way; treat it as a transfer, not a day trip.

Downtown Aspen

Walk to the Aspen Mountain gondola, restaurants and shops; highest prices, no car needed.

Snowmass Village

About 16 km (9.9 mi) downvalley, ski-in/ski-out, better value for families; free buses to Aspen.

Highway 82 corridor (Carbondale, Basalt, Glenwood Springs)

20–60 min drive; much cheaper beds, but you need a car and pay for parking.

Watch out

Safety

Aspen is a low-crime resort town; the real risks are altitude sickness, winter driving on CO-82 and I-70, and avalanche terrain if you go beyond the ski areas.
  • Altitude: Aspen sits near 2,400 m. Take the first day easy, drink water, and expect headaches or worse if you fly straight in from sea level.
  • Maroon Bells: in summer, private cars are barred from the road during daytime hours and you must ride the shuttle; buy tickets ahead.
  • Independence Pass (CO-82) closes for winter, usually from around November to May: check the state road conditions before you rely on it.
  • Winter storms cancel ASE flights and close I-70; keep a buffer day before an international departure.
  • Holiday weeks (late Dec, Presidents' week) are the most expensive and busiest of the year.
