Get around
Downtown Aspen is walkable and the free local buses cover town and Snowmass Village; many hotels run airport shuttles. A car helps for Maroon Bells, Independence Pass and downvalley towns, but parking in Aspen is limited and paid. In winter, skis or the ski shuttles replace the car.

Scams and watch-outs
- Altitude: Aspen sits near 2,400 m. Take the first day easy, drink water, and expect headaches or worse if you fly straight in from sea level.
- Maroon Bells: in summer, private cars are barred from the road during daytime hours and you must ride the shuttle; buy tickets ahead.
- Independence Pass (CO-82) closes for winter, usually from around November to May: check the state road conditions before you rely on it.
- Winter storms cancel ASE flights and close I-70; keep a buffer day before an international departure.
- Holiday weeks (late Dec, Presidents' week) are the most expensive and busiest of the year.
Aspen is a low-crime resort town; the real risks are altitude sickness, winter driving on CO-82 and I-70, and avalanche terrain if you go beyond the ski areas.
