El Chaltén is a 1,600-person trailhead town inside Los Glaciares National Park, founded in the late 1970s as an Argentine outpost facing the Chilean border. Everything worth doing here is a walk: the Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre trails start at the edge of the streets. There is no airport and no ski lift, no museum circuit and no nightlife to speak of. You come for three nights, you walk two big days, and you keep one day spare because wind and cloud cancel hikes here more often than they cancel anything else in Argentina.

Getting around

On foot or by car. Main streets are paved, side streets are gravel, and the town is small enough that you walk everywhere. Trailheads for Laguna Torre and the Condor and Eagle miradores are in town; Río Blanco (Laguna de los Tres) is a 20–30-minute walk or a short transfer. Buses run to El Calafate and, in season, north along Ruta 40.

Start at dawn. The final 1.5 km is steep and exposed; a 500 m side path leads to the Laguna Sucia overlook. Transfer to Río Blanco about AR$18,000 (2026 estimate).

Watch out

Safety

A small, safe trailhead town; the real risks are weather, exposure on the upper Fitz Roy stretch and walking alone on the multi-day circuits. Tell someone your route and check the forecast the morning you leave.
  • Trail fees apply on the popular hikes (about AR$30,000 per day, 2026 estimate); pay at the ranger huts for up to two days, or online for a multi-day discount.
  • The last 1.5 km up to Laguna de los Tres is steep and exposed; in bad weather it is dangerous, not just hard.
  • Trails are very crowded in peak season — leave at dawn to walk at your own pace.
  • Two ATMs in town, and they can run out of cash at weekends; carry pesos and a card.
  • Wind and cloud cancel hikes; build one spare day into any 3-night stay.
  • The Viedma Glacier boat-and-trek tour has not operated since the glacier retreated (as of late 2023) — check before booking.
