LubnyЛубни

Half a day is enough for Lubny's sights: the monastery, the museum and a walk through the old town. Use it as a stop between Kyiv and Poltava, not a base.

Lubny is a quiet town in central Ukraine with a handful of 19th-century churches, a regional museum and the nearby Mhar Monastery. It sees few foreign tourists. Most travellers pass through on the Kyiv–Poltava rail line. The town is safe during daylight hours, but the war means you should check your government's travel advice before any trip.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Ukraine ↗Check your own government travel advice for Ukraine before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Ukraine ↗Airspace is closed; entry is by rail or road from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania or Moldova, with long queues at busy crossings.
  • Ukraine ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Ukraine before you rely on it.

Watch out

Safety

Lubny is far from active front lines as of 2026, but the war in Ukraine continues. Follow local authorities, heed air-raid warnings and keep your documents and a power bank ready. Petty crime is low but not zero.
  • Check your government's travel advisory for Ukraine before planning a trip.
  • Air raid sirens may sound; know the nearest shelter at your hotel.
  • Cash is king: cards work in some shops but carry enough hryvnias.
  • The monastery is about 8 km (5 mi) south of town; plan transport in advance.
