Portbou
Give Portbou one night, or a half-day stop on the cross-border train: the Walter Benjamin memorial and the coves are the whole point.
Portbou is a village of about 1,300 people wedged between the Pyrenees and the sea at Spain's northern border, 20 minutes by train from France. It is a rail frontier town with a pebble beach, a small marina and one of the most affecting memorials in Catalonia. Sights take half a day; the walking and the coves take longer.

- The Tramuntana wind blows hard and cold from the north; a south-facing cove is the shelter.
- Beaches are pebbles with a steep entry to the water: take shoes.
- The station is a border stop, not a through service: France and Spain use different track gauges, so you change trains at Portbou or Cerbère.
- Out of season many restaurants and hotels close; check before a winter trip.
