Portbou
Give Portbou one night, or a half-day stop on the cross-border train: the Walter Benjamin memorial and the coves are the whole point.
Portbou is a village of about 1,300 people wedged between the Pyrenees and the sea at Spain's northern border, 20 minutes by train from France. It is a rail frontier town with a pebble beach, a small marina and one of the most affecting memorials in Catalonia. Sights take half a day; the walking and the coves take longer.

Get around
Everything in the centre is walkable in 15 minutes. The station is uphill from the beach; the climb back is steep. Local trains (RG1, R11) link Portbou with Llançà, Figueres and Girona; the Camí de ronda and the GR-92 cover the coast on foot.

- Out of season many restaurants and hotels close; check before a winter trip.
A small, quiet town and generally safe; the real issues are the steep station climb, slippery pebble beaches and the Tramuntana wind. Petty theft is rare but do not leave bags on the beach.
