Inje is a mountain county in the far north of Gangwon, over 90% forest and valley, with no train station and thin local buses. It works as a 2-night base for the Wondae-ri Birch Forest, Baekdamsa Temple and Inner Seoraksan, or as a 1-night stop on a drive between Seoul and the east coast. Without a car, plan around taxis and fixed bus times.

Getting around

No trains. Local buses link Inje-eup and Wontong to villages but run 1–3 hours apart, so check times at the terminal. Taxis wait at both terminals and are the realistic option without a car; fares add up over long distances. A rental car from Chuncheon, Wonju or Yangyang airport is the practical choice.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are mountain roads, winter ice, sparse buses and the military zone in the north. Save your taxi driver's number and tell someone your trail plan.
  • Local buses are sparse: confirm the last return bus before you set out.
  • The birch forest closes outside its two seasons and has a last-entry cutoff: check dates and times.
  • Winter visitors to the birch forest must have crampons; rentals cost about ₩5,000 (≈ US$4).
  • Gombae-ryeong limits visitors to 450 a day and needs an advance reservation on the Korean-only site.
  • Parts of northern Inje are military or DMZ area: do not photograph or enter restricted zones.
  • Mountain roads ice over in winter; carry chains or check conditions.
