Armstrong is a farm town of about 5,000 in the Spallumcheen Valley, 25 min north of Vernon on Highway 97A. It is a working agricultural centre, not a resort: one artisan cheese plant with tours, a small museum, a weekly market and, in August, the Interior Provincial Exhibition and Stampede, running since 1899. Most travellers pass through in two to three hours on the way between Vernon and the Shuswap.

Getting around

Armstrong is small and flat: walk the centre in 15–20 minutes. BC Transit route 60 (Vernon Regional Transit System) runs Monday to Saturday between Vernon and Enderby with stops in Armstrong — about 35 min from Vernon, 28 min from Enderby; fare $2.50 (check). A car is the practical choice for the cheese plant, Caravan Farm Theatre and the surrounding farms; Highway 97A is the only highway through town.

Safety

Armstrong is a low-crime farm town and safe to walk by day. The real risks are rural: wildlife on the roads at dawn and dusk, summer heat and wildfire smoke, and winter ice on Highway 97A.
  • A car is close to essential: sights and farms sit outside the walkable centre and bus service is weekday-lean.
  • The Interior Provincial Exhibition and Stampede fills the town in late August — book beds weeks ahead or stay in Vernon.
  • Many attractions and farm stands run May–October only; winter is cold and quiet.
  • Highway 97A carries farm traffic and slow vehicles: pass only where marked.
  • Summer heat and wildfire smoke are real in the North Okanagan: check air quality before outdoor plans.
