Torridon is a scattered west-coast district of about 410 people under some of Scotland's steepest mountains: Liathach, Beinn Alligin and Beinn Eighe. There is no station and almost no bus, so the trip works only by car, and the reason to come is hill-walking, not sightseeing. Two nights is the minimum; three if you want a rest day or Applecross.

Getting around

You need your own wheels. The A896 runs through Glen Torridon and is narrow with passing places; the Bealach na Bà road to Applecross has 1-in-8 gradients and tight bends and is not suitable for caravans or large vehicles, which should use the A896 and the coast road instead. Bus 702 links Torridon with Strathcarron for trains; the 705 to Gairloch is a schooldays-only service, so do not build a trip on it.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are mountain weather, single-track roads and no phone signal. Tell someone your route, carry a paper map and a headtorch, and turn back early on Liathach.
  • No train station and effectively no daily bus: without a car you are stuck or walking.
  • Single-track roads with passing places: pull in, do not stop in the middle.
  • Bealach na Bà is closed or impassable in winter and unsuitable for caravans and motorhomes.
  • Mobile signal is patchy: Vodafone 4G only in the village and on approach roads, no 5G; download maps and tell someone your route.
  • Mountain weather changes fast; Liathach in winter is a serious mountaineering proposition.
  • Midges are bad on still summer evenings near water and woodland.
