Felipe Carrillo Puerto is a working Mayan town of about 30,000 people, 1 hour inland from Tulum on Highway 307, and it is not a beach destination. It is the old Caste War sanctuary of Chan Santa Cruz, so the sights are the plaza, two churches and the Talking Cross sanctuary, not sand. Come for low prices, Yucatecan food and a real town; skip it if your trip is about the Caribbean coast.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end. Taxis are plentiful and cheap for short hops; combis run to Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Chetumal from Highway 307 and the plaza. Bikes can be rented behind Holy Cross Church.

Watch out

Safety

The town is calm and low-key by day and evening; the real risks are heat, unlit roadside walking at night and long taxi rides to Sian Ka'an or the airport with no fixed price: agree the fare first.
  • This is not a beach town: the sea is over an hour away, and Sian Ka'an access is via Chunyaxché, 1 h+ by taxi.
  • Cell coverage drops to 3G or 2G on roads outside town; download offline maps.
  • Tap water is not drinkable; buy garrafón or bottled water.
  • Some hotels list a pool or gym that is often closed: confirm before booking.
