Give Murcia one full day and one night as a baroque-and-tapas stop between Alicante and Cartagena; skip it as a beach base.
Murcia is Spain's seventh-largest city, inland on the Segura river about 40 km from the coast. It is a working university city, not a resort: the draw is a compact old town of baroque churches, the Salzillo museum, a strong tapas-and-wine scene and the huerta farmland around it. Most travellers see it in a day, or use it as a cheaper base for Cartagena and the Mar Menor.
