Eucla

Stop one night on the Nullarbor crossing, not a destination: fuel, food, a bed and the Old Telegraph Station dunes, then drive on.

Eucla is the easternmost settlement in Western Australia and one of the smallest: under 50 residents, one roadhouse complex, and the Eyre Highway running through it. It sits roughly halfway between Norseman and Port Augusta, so it exists for road-trippers crossing the Nullarbor. The draw is the buried Old Telegraph Station, the beach below the dunes, and the Bunda Cliffs east of town. Border Village, 12 km east, is the South Australian twin.

Rules in force · 7
  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

You need a car. Eucla is a highway stop with no public transport, no taxi and no town centre to walk. Everything — the telegraph station, the beach, the memorials — is a short drive off the Eyre Highway, mostly on good dirt roads. Fuel up here: petrol runs about 50c/litre above Perth or Adelaide prices, but is cheaper than Nullarbor Roadhouse.

Door-to-door, not ride time

Bunda Cliffs lookouts

go

Door to door: 1–2 h round trip from Eucla

Drive east on the Eyre Highway towards Nullarbor; several signposted lookouts, plus short dirt roads to the cliff edge

Cliffs roll lower near Eucla and steepen towards Nullarbor, so stop at more than one lookout. Stay back from the edge.

Border Village

go

Door to door: 15 min each way

12 km (7.5 mi) east on the Eyre Highway, across the SA border

Roadhouse with motel rooms, cabins, a caravan park and a pool. Last stop before the WA quarantine checkpoint if you are heading west.

Nullarbor Roadhouse

caution

Door to door: About 2 h

190 km (118 mi) east on the Eyre Highway

Fuel is more expensive here than at Eucla. Only worth it as part of the crossing, not as a return trip.

Head of the Bight

overnight

Door to door: 3 h+ from Eucla

Continue east past Nullarbor Roadhouse towards the whale viewing platform

Too far for a comfortable return day. Whale season is roughly May–Oct; check before you commit.

Eucla roadhouse complex

Motel rooms, budget rooms and a caravan park in one complex; the only beds in town. Book ahead in peak crossing season.

Watch out

Safety

Eucla itself is quiet and safe; the real risks are the drive, the heat and the isolation. Fuel up, carry water, tell someone your plan, and stay away from the cliff edges.
  • Distances are huge: Nullarbor Roadhouse is 190 km (118 mi) east, Madura 180 km (112 mi) west. Carry water and fuel.
  • Crossing into WA from SA, there is an agricultural inspection checkpoint after Border Village: declare all plants, fruit and vegetables.
  • Bunda Cliffs are unstable. Stay back from the edge and keep children close.
  • Mobile coverage is Telstra only; other networks drop out. Wi-Fi at the roadhouse is reported to work well.
  • Summer heat is dangerous on this stretch. Do not attempt long walks in the middle of the day.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for the Nullarbor crossing: fuel stops, last light, and a fallback bed at Border Village if Eucla is full.
  2. Walking clusters with rescue anchors: roadhouse, Old Telegraph Station and dunes, beach, Traveller's Cross.
  3. Place pages with verified access notes (Old Telegraph Station, beach, Bunda Cliffs lookouts) and eat pages with roadhouse hours.
  4. Heat and isolation fixtures so the crossing can be planned around summer and fuel gaps.
