Travellers stop for one thing: Pildappa Rock, a wave-shaped granite outcrop 15 km out on a good dirt road. There is a hotel, a community store and no restaurant, so plan food and fuel around Wudinna, 20 km east.

Getting around

You need a car. The town is small enough to walk, but Pildappa Rock and Tcharkuldu Rock are 10–15 km out on unsealed roads that are usually fine for a 2WD in dry weather. Check road conditions after rain before driving out. Fuel up in Wudinna or Poochera; do not count on a bowser in Minnipa.

Safety

A quiet highway town with no real crime problem. The genuine risks are heat, long empty distances, wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, and unsealed roads after rain.
  • Distances are long: Wudinna 20 km (12 mi), Ceduna about 230 km (143 mi), Port Augusta about 300 km (186 mi). Carry water.
  • Unsealed roads to the rocks turn soft after rain; ask locally before setting out.
  • No restaurants in town. The community store has limited hours and stock; bring food or eat in Wudinna.
  • Summer days regularly pass 40 °C (104 °F) and mobile coverage is patchy outside town.
  • Kangaroos and emus on the highway at dawn and dusk: slow down.
