Wismar is a 13th-century Hanseatic port on the Baltic whose brick Gothic old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It sits between Lübeck and Rostock on the A20 and is reached by regional train via Bad Kleinen. The centre is compact enough to cover on foot in a day, which makes it a good one-night stop on a Baltic coast route rather than a base for a week.

Watch out

Safety

Wismar is a small, low-crime town and the centre is safe on foot day and night. The real risks are cobblestones, cold Baltic wind and rain, and cash-only check-ins: carry euros and a card.
  • Cobblestones in the old town: wear shoes with grip, not heels.
  • St. Nikolai's nave has been under restoration for years: check what is open before you pay to enter.
  • Accommodation tax is charged locally on top of the quoted room rate; ask whether the price includes it.
  • Some smaller hotels and guesthouses are cash only: carry euros.
