Angel Fire is a village of about 1,200 people in the Moreno Valley, 30–40 min east of Taos over Palo Flechado Pass on US 64. One resort owns the mountain, the country club and the lake, so winter is skiing and tubing and summer is downhill mountain biking, golf and hiking. Base elevation is about 8,400 ft, the summit over 10,000 ft. Off-season, most restaurants and lifts close.

Getting around

You need a car. US 64 crosses the valley and NM 434 runs north–south to Mora; both are mountain roads that ice up in winter. The resort runs winter shuttles between parking lots and the base, sometimes stopping at condos if asked ahead. Otherwise it is walking, skiing or driving.

Watch out

Safety

Low crime, high altitude. The real risks are altitude sickness, icy mountain roads, off-season closures and unmarked tree wells off-piste: ski with a partner and check the snow report.
  • Altitude: the town sits near 8,400 ft and the summit over 10,000 ft. Hydrate, limit alcohol on day one and watch for headaches.
  • Winter driving: US 64 over Palo Flechado Pass can be icy or closed; carry chains or snow tyres and check road conditions.
  • Off-season: many restaurants and resort activities shut between ski and bike seasons, and most kitchens close on Mondays.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the mountain and on the pass; download offline maps.
  • Swimming is not allowed in the resort lake or Eagle Nest Lake.
