Ipoh is Perak's capital and Malaysia's third-largest city, built on Kinta Valley tin and now known for its food and its shophouse Old Town. The centre is walkable and cheap; the cave temples and the Cameron Highlands gateway sit outside it. Most travellers pass through for one or two nights between Kuala Lumpur and Penang, or use it as a base for Perak.

Old Town is walkable; New Town and the outskirts are best by Grab, with fares shown in the app before you ride. Local buses are cheap but poorly published. A car helps for the Cameron Highlands and outlying cave temples.

Safety

Ipoh is generally safe for tourists; the real risks are heat, traffic when crossing roads, and unlicensed taxis. Use Grab, keep bags zipped in markets, and carry water.
