Chittorgarh is a fort town on the Udaipur–Ajmer rail and road line, 112 km from Udaipur. The hill fort — a UNESCO World Heritage site — is the reason to come, and it is a half-day visit. Most travellers see it as a stop between Udaipur and Bundi or Ajmer, or as a day trip from Udaipur.

Getting around

Autos and taxis handle the town and the 1 km climb to Ram Pol. An auto tour of the fort with waiting time is quoted around ₹125–150 (2026 estimate, check the waiting time first). A bicycle works on the flat fort top but the climb is hard. The fort's circular road links all seven gates and the monuments.

Watch out

Safety

Chittorgarh is a small, low-crime town and the fort is safe in daylight. The real risks are heatstroke in April–June, the steep unlit fort road after dark, and auto drivers quoting a fort tour without a waiting limit — agree the total first.
  • Summer daytime highs pass 43°C: start the fort at opening, carry water, and be off the hill by noon.
  • Fort entry is ticketed and the foreign rate is far higher than the Indian rate: carry cash and expect a camera fee at some monuments.
  • Auto drivers quote a fort tour without a waiting limit: agree the total and the hours before you get in.
  • Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary needs prior permission from the District Forest Officer, so do not turn up expecting entry.
