Echizen is a small Fukui city built from the 2005 merger of Takefu and Imadate, and the station is still called Takefu. It is a low-rise castle-town core of white-walled warehouses plus two craft districts: Echizen washi paper in the east and Echizen forged knives in the south. Sights sit 5–15 km apart with thin bus coverage, so a car changes the trip from a half day to a full one. Most travellers pass through on the Hokuriku line between Kyoto and Kanazawa.

Getting around

Takefu Station is on the JR Hokuriku line; Fukui Railway also runs local trains and buses in the city. Sights are spread out and buses are infrequent, so a rental car from Takefu is the fastest option. Taxis are limited outside the station. A bicycle works for the downtown core only.

Watch out

Safety

Echizen is a quiet, low-crime city and walking the centre at night is fine. The real risks are rural roads after dark, infrequent last buses, and winter snow on the Hokuriku line.
  • Two neighbours are called Echizen town and Minami-Echizen town: check the address before you book or board.
  • The station and highway interchange say Takefu, not Echizen.
  • Buses to the washi and knife districts run a few times a day: check the last return before you set out.
  • Many temples and workshops close one day a week and have no English signage: check ahead.
  • Rural roads are narrow and unlit at night; avoid driving after dark if you are not used to it.
