Wycliffe Well is a tiny Barkly Tableland settlement on the Stuart Highway, about 130 km south of Tennant Creek and 380 km north of Alice Springs. It built its name as the self-proclaimed UFO Capital of Australia, with sighting logs and a big beer list at the roadhouse. After a major flood in 2022 the roadhouse closed and has been abandoned since, and the holiday park is reported closed in 2026, so there is no reliable bed, meal or fuel here. Plan your stop at Tennant Creek or Devils Marbles instead, and pass through only if you want to see the site.

Walk. The settlement is a few hundred metres across, and Lake Wycliffe is about a 300 m walk from the roadhouse area. Everything else is by car on the Stuart Highway; there is no local transport.

Safety

The main risks are heat, long fuel gaps and road trains, not crime. Carry water, fill up at Tennant Creek or Alice Springs, and do not arrive expecting an open roadhouse.
  • The roadhouse closed after a major flood in 2022 and has been abandoned since; the holiday park is reported closed in 2026. Do not count on fuel, food or a bed here.
