  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • West Africa ↗Carry an original yellow fever vaccination certificate on any West African trip: several countries on the coast road demand it of every arrival, and the rest demand it after you have passed through a neighbour.
  • West Africa ↗Cross land borders and drive between cities in daylight only; plan each crossing as a full travel day with cash for fees and passport copies for checkpoints.
  • Nigeria ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport with the Nigeria Immigration Service or a Nigerian mission; most visitors need a visa arranged before travel.
  • Nigeria ↗Governments advise against all or all but essential travel to a number of Nigerian states; check your own government's advice for each state on your route.
  • Nigeria ↗Check the yellow-fever vaccination certificate rules for Nigeria before you fly; carry the certificate with your passport.

Kaduna is the capital of Kaduna State and the old political centre of northern Nigeria, with a colonial-era footbridge, the Arewa House museum and a rail junction on the Abuja–Kaduna line. Most sights sit along Ali Akilu Road and Independence Way, so a single full day covers the city. Travellers usually pass through on the way to Zaria, Kafanchan or Kano, and the honest reason to stop is the train and the history, not a beach or a nightlife strip.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The city spreads along a few main roads, so taxis and ride-hailing are the practical way to move; agree the fare before you get in. Keke (three-wheel) and motorcycle taxis cover short hops. Rigasa station, the Abuja train terminal, is well west of the centre and needs a taxi. Walking works only within a single district.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Zaria

go

Door to door: About 2 h

Road north on the Zaria road, about 1 h 30 min by car; buses and shared taxis from the main motor parks

Old walled city and emir's palace; a full day, or sleep over and return the next morning.

Kafanchan

caution

Door to door: About 3 h

Road south via the Kafanchan junction, roughly 2 h 30 min by car

Rail junction town in southern Kaduna; check current state advice before travelling.

Kagoro

caution

Door to door: 3–3.5 h

Road south toward Kafanchan, then local roads to the hills

Kagoro mountain is the tallest in the middle belt; go with a local guide and check advice.

Zangon Kataf

caution

Door to door: About 3.5 h

Road south from Kaduna, about 3 h by car

Rural southern Kaduna; check state advice and travel in daylight.

Abuja

go

Door to door: 2.5–3 h

Train from Rigasa station, or road via the Abuja–Kaduna expressway, about 2 h 30 min by car

The standard onward leg; book the train ahead if you want a seat.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

City Centre (Ali Akilu Road / Independence Way)

Walkable to Arewa House, the museum and Lugard Hall; most mid-range hotels and the main restaurants sit here.

Unguwan Rimi / Lafia Road

Quieter residential streets south of the centre; several larger hotels with pools and bars.

Barnawa

Southern suburb, close to Barnawa Paradise Park; useful if you have a car or driver.

Watch out

Safety

Kaduna State carries travel advisories from several governments. Check your own government's advice for the state on your dates, keep to daylight movement, use a hotel-arranged car after dark, and treat any trip outside the city as a decision to re-check, not a default.
  • Check your government's travel advice for Kaduna State before you book; advisories change and can cover the whole state.
  • Avoid moving after dark outside your hotel district, and use a hotel-arranged car rather than flagging a taxi at night.
  • Some hotels in the north of the city do not serve alcohol; ask before you book if that matters.
  • Carry small naira notes: markets and keke drivers rarely have change for large bills.
  • Roads to Abuja and Kano are generally good, but expect checkpoints and allow extra time.

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Kaduna. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for KAD: confirm current operators, taxi fallback and a daylight arrival window.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: City Centre, Unguwan Rimi, Barnawa and Rigasa station.
  3. Place pages with verified hours (Arewa House, the museum, Lugard Footbridge, Kajuru Castle) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. State-advice fixtures so the safety line can go green or red per month.
