ClarenceClarence, New York

Base in Buffalo or Amherst and give Clarence one half-day for Clarence Hollow's antique shops; only sleep here if you have a car and want quiet.

Clarence is a second-ring Buffalo suburb of about 30,700 people, 9 km east of Transit Road along Main Street. Its draw is Clarence Hollow: a compact strip of antique shops, a handful of heritage buildings and a small museum cluster. Everything else — malls, plazas, subdivisions — is ordinary suburban Erie County. Without a car, skip it.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is effectively required. Main Street (NY 5) runs east–west through Harris Hill and the Hollow; Transit Road (NY 78) is the north–south commercial spine and the Amherst boundary. NFTA Metro buses 48, 49 and 66 only touch Transit Road, with few trips and evening-only outbound service — do not plan around them.

Buffalo

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

I-90 or Main Street west by car

Museums, waterfront and food; the reason most people are in the region.

Amherst

go

Door to door: About 15–20 min

Transit Road (NY 78) south

More hotels, malls and restaurants; useful as a base instead of Clarence.

Tonawanda

caution

Door to door: About 25–30 min

I-290 to I-190 north

Riverside and canal-side walks; combine with Buffalo rather than a separate trip.

Cheektowaga

skip

Door to door: About 25 min

I-90 west to NY 78

Airport and retail strip; nothing a visitor needs beyond the terminal.

Lancaster

caution

Door to door: About 25–30 min

Main Street (NY 5) west, then NY 78 south

Similar small-town centre; pick one of the two, not both.

Grand Island

go

Door to door: About 35–40 min

I-290 to I-190 north over the bridge

State-park trails and river views; best May–Oct.

Alden

skip

Door to door: About 30 min

Main Street east through Newstead

Rural hamlet; only worth it if you are already on the rail trail.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Clarence Hollow (Main Street)

Walkable to the antique strip and the historical society; very few beds, book early.

Transit Road corridor

Chain hotels and big-box shopping at the Amherst town line; 10–15 min drive to the Hollow.

Clarence Center

Quieter, on the Peanut Line trail; still needs a car for everything.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime, affluent suburb; the real risks are winter driving, deer on rural roads at dusk and unlit trail sections. Standard US precautions apply.
  • No useful bus service into the Hollow: without a car you are stranded.
  • Main Street traffic through the Hollow is heavy for cyclists.
  • Winter lake-effect snow and ice; northern Erie County gets less than the hills to the south but still plenty.
  • Antique shops keep short, irregular hours — check before driving out.
