Jos is the capital of Plateau State and sits high enough (about 1,200 m) that evenings are cool while the rest of Nigeria swelters. It was built on tin and still shows it: mine lakes, a museum with Nok terracotta, and rocky hills on the edge of town. Security in and around Plateau State changes month to month, so this page treats Jos as a place you go after checking your government's current advice, not a default stop.

Getting around

Shared taxis, tricycles (keke) and minibuses run fixed routes and are cheap; a private taxi costs more but is the safer choice after dark. Okada (motorcycle taxis) are best avoided — potholes and weak safety practice. Distances are short but traffic and checkpoints add time; agree the fare before you get in.

Jos is calm on ordinary days but Plateau State has a history of communal and insurgent violence; check your government's current advice, move in daylight, use a driver you trust and keep the evening short.
