Chaguanas is central Trinidad's market town and the country's Indo-Trinidadian heartland, halfway between Port of Spain and San Fernando on the Uriah Butler Highway. There is no beach and little for a sightseer to walk to, but the Main Road bazaar, the jewellery and fashion shops, and the food are a real half-day. Most travellers pass through on the way to Caroni Swamp or time a visit to Divali Nagar in October or November.

Maxi-taxis (12–24-seat minibuses) run the Main Road and to Port of Spain and San Fernando; private taxis and ride-hailing are easy to find. The shopping strip is best done on foot. A car helps for Caroni Swamp and Felicity.

Central Trinidad is generally calm by day. As anywhere in Trinidad, keep valuables out of sight in busy markets, and take a licensed taxi or ride-hailing car after dark rather than walking unlit side streets.
