Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovin…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Balkans ↗Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in pockets of Croatia's former front line: outside towns keep to tarmac and waymarked paths, and treat red triangle signs and taped-off fields as absolute.
  • Balkans ↗Serbia refuses onward entry to travellers who reached Kosovo from a third country and then try to cross straight into Serbia; route Kosovo–Serbia legs through North Macedonia or Montenegro, or start the loop in Serbia.
  • Balkans ↗Hire cars need written permission from the rental company and valid insurance for every country on the line; Kosovo sells its own border insurance and some contracts exclude Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia outright.
  • Romania ↗Romania is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Romanian sources for your passport.
  • Romania ↗Drivers need an electronic road vignette (rovinieta) on national roads; rental cars normally include it, but check.
  • Romania ↗Brown bears live in the Carpathians and sometimes enter towns and roadsides: never feed or approach them, and follow local warnings.

Oradea sits 8 km from the Hungarian border and 650 km by train from Bucharest, so most travellers reach it from Budapest, Debrecen or Cluj rather than the capital. The compact centre is a dense run of Austro-Hungarian Secession and Baroque buildings, restored over the past decade, plus a star-shaped fortress and a spa resort 8 km out. Two nights covers it well; one night works as a border stopover.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable end to end in about 25 minutes. Trams and buses cover the rest, including the run out toward Băile Felix (tram 3 to the Nufărul terminus, then bus 511). Taxis are cheap; use a metered, licensed car and confirm the meter is on.

Băile Felix

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Thermal spa resort 8 km out; an adult day ticket at the Apollo strand was around 30 lei — check current prices and hours.

Arad

caution

Door to door: About 2–2.5 h

Train or intercity bus

Worth it as a stop on the way south rather than a return day trip.

Carei

caution

Door to door: About 2 h+

Train toward Satu Mare, then local transport

Károlyi castle and a quiet border town; check train times.

Zalău

skip

Door to door: About 3 h

Bus or train via a change

Too slow for a day return; fold it into a northern loop instead.

Debrecen, Hungary

overnight

Door to door: About 2–3 h

Train toward the border

Cross-border hop; check timetables and passport rules before you commit.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Centru / Str. Republicii

Walk to everything; the street is also the loudest at night, so ask for a courtyard room.

Civic Centre / Bd. Magheru

Quieter, still central, 10–15 min walk to the pedestrian core.

Near the railway station

Practical for a one-night stopover or an early departure; not a sightseeing base.

Nufărul quarter

Residential satellite area; only useful if you are heading to Băile Felix.

Watch out

Safety

Oradea is safe by Romanian standards and safer than most Western European cities of its size. The real risks are petty: inflated bar menus, unlicensed taxis, street money-changing and distraction theft near the station.
  • Some bars hand foreign customers a menu with inflated prices, often shown in both old and new lei — ask the total before ordering.
  • Do not change money on the street; use a bank or an exchange office with a posted rate.
  • Avoid buying goods from sellers at the railway station.
  • Use only licensed taxis with a visible meter and company markings.
  • Watch for distraction theft around the station and busy shopping streets.
