Oradea sits 8 km from the Hungarian border and 650 km by train from Bucharest, so most travellers reach it from Budapest, Debrecen or Cluj rather than the capital. The compact centre is a dense run of Austro-Hungarian Secession and Baroque buildings, restored over the past decade, plus a star-shaped fortress and a spa resort 8 km out. Two nights covers it well; one night works as a border stopover.

Get around
The centre is walkable end to end in about 25 minutes. Trams and buses cover the rest, including the run out toward Băile Felix (tram 3 to the Nufărul terminus, then bus 511). Taxis are cheap; use a metered, licensed car and confirm the meter is on.
