Mbeya is southwestern Tanzania's transport hinge: the TAZARA railway to Zambia, buses to Malawi via Kyela and to Zambia via Tunduma, and the road to Lake Tanganyika. The town itself is a market city at about 1,700 m; the reasons to linger are outside it — a crater lake, a flower plateau and waterfalls in the Rungwe hills. Most travellers pass through in a night; two or three nights suit hikers and flower-season visitors.

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable by day. Dalla-dallas (minibuses) and coasters cover the roads but are awkward with luggage; taxis are the practical choice for the railway station (about 4 km south), the bus station and after dark. Songwe Airport needs a taxi or pre-arranged transfer. Agree the taxi fare before you get in.

Watch out

Safety

Mbeya is a working transit city, not a beach town: daytime walking in the centre is fine, take taxis after dark, and treat the bus station as the main risk area — ticket scams, not violence, are the usual problem.
  • Bus-ticket scams toward Malawi: buy at the operator's office, not from touts, and ask other passengers where the bus actually goes.
  • As of the last field reports there are no direct Mbeya–Malawi buses; transport runs to Kyela, then you cross to the Malawi side.
  • Long rains (Mar–May) can make highland tracks and the Kitulo road difficult.
  • Carry cash: some ATMs and card machines fail; Equity, Stanbic and DTB have Visa/Mastercard ATMs (check).
  • Altitude about 1,700 m: nights are cool, bring a layer.
